There's an interesting article we would like to share titled “Is Porn a Public Health Crisis? 16 States Say Yes,” written by Mattie Quinn at governing.com.
The article explains that 16 states have “passed resolutions declaring pornography a public health crisis.”
Utah was the first state to get the ball rolling in 2016, followed by Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee and Virginia.
The article quotes Jennifer Johnson, Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University, who has studied the effects of pornography on human behavior, as saying, “The public likes to think of pornography as a form of sex and morality, and those things are highly political. But porn is neither one of those. It’s a form of commerce, it’s a big business just like Walmart or the tobacco industry…. (Also) high use of pornography is tied to greater sexual insecurity and dissatisfaction.”
The article brings up some good points. Is porn a public health crisis? Are users truly aware of the effects porn may be having on their sex lives? Do users understand what a big business porn is?
It is nice to know that some public officials are taking this seriously and recognizing the impact of porn on their citizens.
